EVBG freut sich MAMACAMP bei uqbar zu präsentieren, eine kollaborative Ausstellung, die Arbeiten der Künstlerinnen Josefin Arnell und Natasja Loutchko zusammenbringt. Arnell und Loutchko haben sich im Sommer 2016 kennengelernt und bemerkt, dass ihre Schwestern den gleichen Namen haben und ihre Mütter wahrscheinlich dasselbe Mittel zum Bleichen ihrer Haare verwenden. Sie begannen Mamacamp als einen fortlaufenden Dialog über vererbte Traumata, Schwesternschaft in und zwischen ihren jeweiligen künstlerischen Praktiken. Mit Video-Arbeiten, Installationen und Drucken erforscht die Ausstellung MAMACAMP das Mutter- und Tochtersein und inwiefern Beziehungen durch Abhängigkeit und Zuneigung, Zärtlichkeit und Macht strukturiert werden.
In den gezeigten Filmen treten beide Künstlerinnen mit ihren Müttern eine Reise an. Loutchko fährt nach Kalifornien in ein „mental SPA“. Arnell nimmt ihre Mutter mit nach Brasilien, um dort den berühmten spirituellen Heiler John of God zu treffen. Die Mütter performen für die Kamera, nehmen eine Rolle an und fallen wieder aus ihr heraus, nehmen Anweisungen an oder fragen nach ihnen. Ja, mach die Tür noch einmal auf, nein, warum kannst du es nicht so machen. Warum bist du immer so? Wird die Reise unternommen, um eine neue Arbeit zu produzieren? Weiß eine Mutter, wenn du deine eigene Wahrheit unterläufst? Ja, denn sie ist deine Mutter. Schmier ihr Schlamm ins Gesicht, vorsichtig, um ihre Augen herum, ich passe auf dich auf, wir sind uns nah, meine Finger auf deiner Haut, mein Finger in deinem Ohr.
Ein Jugendzimmer wird im Ausstellungsraum eingerichtet, ein Ort der Sicherheit und Sorge. Die Neunziger aber mit Flatscreen Fernseher. Die Wände sind mit Pferdepostern plakatiert, hier ist alles, wofür ich mich interessiere, mein ganzes Innenleben ins Außen gekehrt. Ich bin ein PFERDEMÄDCHEN. Zu alt für Plüschtiere, aber du kannst mich umarmen.
Wer hat jetzt die Kontrolle? Das Pferd oder ich? Ich reite es das Pferd, ich kontrolliere es, oder nicht? Ich weiß, ich tue es nicht, denn wir teilen die Kontrolle. Ich halte die Zügel, ich ziehe, du ziehst zurück, ich flechte deinen Schweif, du bist hübsch, aber ich bin auch hübsch. Mein Pferdeschwanz ist fest. Etwas, woran man sich festhalten kann. Wir werden schneller, ich reite dich und mein Arsch hüpft, aber ich folge der Bewegung.
Josefin Arnell wurde 1984 in Schweden geboren, sie lebt und arbeitet in Amsterdam und Berlin. Sie hat einen MA in Dirty Arts vom Sandberg Instituut und nahm 2015–2016 an dem Residenzprogramm an der Rijks Akademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam, teil.
Natasja Loutchko wurde 1983 in Schweden geboren, sie lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. Sie studierte an der Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main und an der Konstfack in Stockholm. Seit 2015 betreibt Loutchko das Künstlerprojekt CAVE3000 in ihrer eigenen Studiowohnung.

EVBG is excited to present MAMACAMP at uqbar, a collaborative duo exhibition that brings together works by artists Josefin Arnell and Natasja Loutchko. Arnell and Loutchko met in the summer of 2016 and realized that their sisters had the same names and that their moms might be using the same bleaching brand. They started Mamacamp as an ongoing dialogue about inherited trauma and sisterhood in and between their practices. Including video, installation and prints, the exhibition MAMACAMP explores how motherhood, control, comfort and codependency are intertwined.
The two featured films document the travels that both artists undertook with their mothers. Loutchko went to California to undergo a mental SPA. Arnell took her mother to Brazil to meet the famous spiritual healer John of God. The mothers perform for the camera, slipping in and out of character, receiving instructions or asking for them. Yes, open that door again, no, why can’t you do it like that. Mother and daughter on a voyage. Why are you always like this? Is this trip undertaken for the purpose of making work, does a mother know when you are subverting your truth? Yes, because she is your mother. Rub mud on her face, careful near her eyes, I take care of you, we are close, my fingers on your skin, my finger in your ear.
A make-believe teenage bedroom is constructed in the exhibition space, a place of angst and safety. The nineties but with a flatscreen TV. The walls covered in posters, here are all my interests, all of my insides splashed on the outside. I’m a HORSEGIRL. Too old for stuffed animals but you can hug me.
Who is in control now? The horse or me? I ride the horse, I control the horse, don’t I? I know I don’t, we collaborate on control. I hold the reigns, I pull, you pull back, I braid your tail, don’t you look pretty but I am pretty too. My ponytail’s so tight. Something to hold on to. We’re going faster now, I ride you, my ass bounces but I follow the movement.
Josefin Arnell was born in 1984 in Sweden, based in Amsterdam and Berlin. She holds an MA in Dirty Art from Sandberg Instituut and participated in the artist in residence program at Rijks Akademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam, 2015 – 2016.
Natasja Loutchko was born in 1983 Sweden, currently lives and works in Berlin.
She studied at Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main and Konstfack University of Art in Stockholm. Since 2015 Loutchko runs the artist project CAVE3000 in her apartment/studio.
