Faust, Mapuches, Santiago Maldonado and the occupied land
A collaborative reading and translation

Faust, the genious project-maker and engineer looks back at the work of his life-time: prospering cultural landscapes, newly created lands, modern harbours and a merchant fleet carrying goods from far-away continents. Faust is the logistics-king of international free trade, with Mephisto as his chief-ideologue and henchman. Only a nameless traveller and a friendly old couple, Philemon and Baucis, appear as their adversaries, who quickly fall prey to the capitalist turnover.
In cross-referencing Faust with the on-going violent repression of indigenous land claims in Patagonia, we look to the far-away and yet so near geographies of this faustian relation to nature, and plea for those who resist, and who have resisted through history.
We ask: what does the death of those nameless travellers mean for us here and now, how can they be called and recalled by their names, and how could the laments for Philemon and Baucis be translated into a critique of an unlimited „accumulation by dispossession“?
How could Faust, in his final incarnation as land-developer, be understood today, how can his success, his burning ambition, his blindness and subsequent death be re-interpreted in the light of the on-going ecocide and the death toll of the extractivist and neo-colonial frontier?
After the reading, we will serve some drinks and snacks.

Faust, der geniale Projektemacher und Ingenieur blickt auf sein Lebenswerk: blühende Kulturlandschaften, neu erschaffene Länder, Überseehäfen, eine Handelsflotte, die Waren und Schätze aus fernen Kontinenten bringt. Faust ist der Logistik-King des internationalen Freihandels, Mephisto sein Chef-Ideologe und Handlanger. Ein namenloser Reisender und ein freundliches altes Paar namens Philemon und Baucis sind ihre einzigen Widersacher, die schnell zu Opfern der kapitalistischen Umwälzungen werden.
Indem wir Faust mit der fortwährenden gewalttätigen Unterdrückung indigener Landansprüche in Patagonien in Beziehung setzen, richten wir den Blick auf die fernen und doch so nahen Geografien dieses faustischen Naturverhältnisses und auf diejenigen, die Widerstand leisten und im Lauf der Geschichte geleistet haben.
Wir fragen: Was bedeutet der Tod dieser namenlosen Reisenden für uns hier und jetzt, wie können sie beim Namen genannt und erinnert werden, und wie können sich die Klagelieder für Philemon und Baucis in eine Kritik der grenzenlosen "Akkumulation durch Enteignung" übersetzen lassen?
Wie könnte Faust in seiner letzten Inkarnation als Landentwickler, sein Erfolg, sein brennender Ehrgeiz, seine Blindheit und sein anschließender Tod heute verstanden werden angesichts der andauernden Umweltzerstörung und der Zahl der Totesopfer an den Randgebieten der extraktivistischen, neokolonialen Landnahme?
Nach der Lesung werden Drinks und Snacks serviert.
