Within the framework of the book presentation Cairoscape - Images, Imagination and Imaginary of a Contemporary Mega City

The lecture-performance of Sherif El Azma deals tentatively with the 'mechanics of enframing’ through architecture in the megalopolis of Cairo. Out of a reservoir of personal memories and free associations the artist tries to reconstructs an historical, architectural situation. In his artwork, he employs artistic and architecture-related practices such as maquettes and 3D-modelling to reproduce architectural situations. His main interest is to renegotiate positions of cultural and social representation.
The lecture takes place on the occasion of the presentation of the book Cairoscape - Images, Imagination and Imagin ary of a Contemporary Mega City, published by argobooks in 2009, and documenting the homonymous exhibition, curated by Marina Sorbello and Antje Weitzel at Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien in 2008. In this show, Sherif El Azma presented his photo installation and performance The Psycho-Geography of Loose Associations, representing the mega city of Cairo through psycho-geographical investigation.
Sherif El Azma is currently participating in the exhibition TASWIR at Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin, with an architectural model of Cairo and a video work, following subjective laws and psychographic ideas. On 27.11.2009 he will take part in a public workshop with Erik Göngrich (Artist), Maria Golia (writer), Philipp Misselwitz (urbanist) and Bettina Springer (curator, urbanist) on urban planning and urban development in Cairo and Istanbul.
Sherif El Azma is an artist and filmmaker based in Cairo.

im Rahmen der Buchpräsentation Cairoscape - Images, Imagination and Imaginary of a Contemporary Mega City

Der performative Vortrag von Sherif El Azma ist ein Versuch, zu zeigen, wie Architektur in der Mega-Stadt Kairo als rahmende Struktur wirkt. Aus einem Reservoir von persönlichen Erinnerungen und freier Assoziationen rekonstruiert der Künstler, eine historische, architektonische Situation. Auch in seinen Arbeiten nutzt El Azma künstlerische und Architekturnahe Praktiken wie Modelbau und 3D-Modellierung, um architektonische Situationen nachzubilden. Sein künstlerisches Interesse gilt einer kritischen Analyse kultureller und gesellschaft¬licher Repräsentation.
Der Künstler spricht anlässlich der Präsentation der Publikation Cairoscape - Images, Imagination and Imaginary of a Contemporary Mega City, die 2009 bei argobooks erschienen ist und die gleichnamige, 2008 von Marina Sorbello und Antje Weitzel im Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien kuratierte Ausstellung dokumentiert. Sherif El Azma hat in dieser Ausstellung seine Photoinstallation und Performance The Psycho-Geography of Loose Associations gezeigt, in denen die Mega-Stadt Kairo anhand einer psycho-geografischen Untersuchung vorgestellt wird.
Zur Zeit ist Sherif El Azma mit einem Architektur-Modell Kairos und einer Videoarbeit, die subjektiven Gesetzmäßigkeiten und psychographischen Ideen folgen, in der Ausstellung TASWIR im Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin vertreten. Am 27.11.2009 wird er dort zusammen mit Erik Göngrich (Künstler), Maria Golia (Schriftstellerin), Philipp Misselwitz (Stadtforscher) und Bettina Springer (Kuratorin, Stadtforscherin) an einem öffentlichen Workshop über Städtebau und Stadtentwicklung in Kairo und Istanbul teilnehmen.
Sherif El Azma lebt und arbeitet als Künstler und Filmemacher in Kairo.
