Gao Shiqiang – Condition Report

Curator Elke Falat presents a selection of video works from 2007 to 2010 by the Chinese artist Gao Shiqiang. Born in 1971, he belongs to the generation of artists who experiences the legacy of Mao and the Cultural Revolution as the background of recent Chinese reality – with all its contradictions and discrepancy. “For my generation, history has transformed into a trance and the real world into a joke”, he says. Unfortunately not a good joke, as he reveals in his works, which he describes as a “quartet of history, life, language and mind” and which contain metaphorical and political fault lines signifying states of alienation, apathy and stagnation of the post-revolutionary life in China.
In the first part of Revolution (2007, 42 min) a group of young people are staging the history of the Chinese Revolution on the rooftop of a high-rise building. Their behaviour and costumes seem exaggerated. In the second part of the film, Gao Shiqiang asks the actors for their personal ideas and ideal of life, which turn out to be very diverse. The only thing they have in common is that they are diametrically opposed to any of the ideas of the Chinese Revolution they were staging right before.
Total Solar Eclipse (2010, 46 min), is shot after the economic crisis, which also had an influence on the booming Chinese economy. On display are abandoned factories and people committing absurd acts and rituals in slow motion. In the background, piano music exacerbates the disturbing effect of the scenario.
The video Faint with Oxygen (2009, 29 min) depicts the story of a shepherd who lives in Tibet. His dream is to get to know the world and culture beyond his village. To this end, he tries to learn Mandarin, by listening to the radio. The Radio shatters and with it his dream, which was the reason for his absurd endeavour. The film also focuses on the reversed view, from the big city to Tibet and ends in front of a shop window selling traditional Tibetan handicrafts.
This exhbition is part of Vorspiel 2014. a distributed programme of transmediale and CTM partner events happening before the festivals, dedicated to present Berlin-based project spaces, collectives and initiatives that are working in the field of digital art & culture and experimental sound & music.
Gao Shiqiang lives and works in Hangzhou. He is Professor of Experimental Art Department, China Academy of Art, Hangzhou.

Die Kuratorin Elke Falat zeigt bei Uqbar eine Auswahl an Videoarbeiten des chinesischen Künstlers Gao Shiqiang aus den Jahren von 2007 bis 2010. Geboren 1971, gehört er einer Künstlergeneration an, die noch die direkten Auswirkungen der Kulturrevolution erfahren hat und vor diesem Hintergrund die Diskrepanzen und Widersprüchlichkeiten der aktuellen chinesischen Gesellschaft erlebt. „Für meine Generation, hat sich die Historie in eine nebulösen Trance verwandelt und die reale Welt in einen Witz“ kommentiert Gao Shiqiang. Und leider in keinen sehr guten Witz, wie die von politisch metaphorischen Anspielungen durchzogenen narrativen Videoarbeiten deutlichen machen, die er selber einmal als „Quartett aus Geschichte, alltäglichem Leben, Sprache, kritischer Reflexion“ bezeichnet hat. Zustände der Entfremdung, Apathie und Stagnation des postrevolutionären Lebens in China werden dabei sichtbar.
Im ersten Teil von Revolution (2007, 42 min) spielt eine Gruppe von jungen Menschen laienhaft theatral und wild kostümiert die Geschichte der chinesischen Revolution auf dem Dach eines Hochhauses nach. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit befragt Gao Shiqiang die Darsteller, nach ihren persönlichen Lebensentwürfen und Werten. Dieses stellen sich als sehr unterschiedliche heraus. Das einzig verbindende ist, dass sie im diametralen Gegensatz zu den Idealen der gerade eben noch inszenierten Revolution stehen.
Total Solar Eclipse (2010, 46 min) ist nach der Finanzkrise, die auch die boomende Wirtschaft Chinas getroffen hat, entstanden. Zu sehen sind verlassene Produktionsstätten und Menschen die dekontextualisiert absurde Handlungen und Rituale in Zeitlupe vollziehen. Dabei läuft sanfte Klaviermusik im Hintergrund, die die verstörende Wirkung des Szenarios noch verstärkt.
Das Video Faint with Oxygen (2009, 29min) erzählt die Geschichte eines Schäfers, der im tibetischen Hochland lebt. Sein Traum ist es die Welt und Kultur, jenseits seines Dorfes kennenzulernen. Er versucht anhand eines Radios die chinesische Amtssprache Mandarin zu lernen. Das Radio zerbricht und damit auch sein Traum, der an das absurde Unterfangen geknüpft war. Der Film richtet aber auch den Blick umgekehrt von der Großstadt nach Tibet und endet schließlich vor einem Geschäft in dem traditionelle Schnitzereien aus Tibet verkauft werden.
Diese Ausstellung ist Teil von Vorspiel 2014, ein Veranstaltungsprogramm der transmediale und des CTM, vor dem eigentlichen Festival. Es dient dazu Berliner Projekträume, Kollektive und Initiativen vorzustellen, die im Bereich von digitaler Kunst & Kultur sowie experimenteller Musik und Sound arbeiten.
Gao Shiqiang lebt und arbeitet in Hangzhou. Er ist Professor am Experimental Art Department der China Academy of Art, Hangzhou.
