Im Zuge ihrer Recherchen hat sich die Kairoer Künstlerin Yara Mekawei mit der Atmosphäre beschäftigt, die Menschen am Morgen während des Frühstücks umgibt, und mit den Geräuschen und Klängen, die damit einhergehen. Ob Zuhause, am Arbeitsplatz, im Restaurant oder auf der Straße, wo immer man auch ist, der Sound des Frühstück markiert den Beginn eines frischen, neuen Tags. Geräusche von klapperndem Geschirr, Besteck, Kaffeemaschinen, kochendes Wasser, morgendliche Diskussionen, Fernseh- oder Radio-Nachrichtensendungen, all diese Klänge verändern sich je nach Art und Ort des Frühstücks.
Die Künstlerin hat Töne und Bilder, die den alltäglichen, oft übersehenen Akt des Frühstückens begleiten, gesammelt und in einer Soundinstallation zusammengeführt. The Breakfast stellt eine imaginäre Verbindung zwischen Menschen auf der ganzen Welt her, die alle in einem bestimmten Zeitraum den gleichen Akt vollziehen – auch wenn die Durchführung dieses Akts aufgrund unterschiedlicher Gewohnheiten, Traditionen oder des Orts variiert. Das Ergebnis ist eine utopische Mischung, die sich spielerisch über Grenzen hinwegsetzt.
Die Installation im Projektraum uqbar ist in Kooperation mit dem Kairoer Künstler Mina Nasr entstanden. Dem fragilen Netz aus Lautsprechermembranen, mit dem Mekawei ihr Frühstück-Soundscape in den Raum überträgt, steht auf der gegenüberliegenden Wand eine großformatige Wandzeichnung Nasrs gegenüber. In seinen Arbeiten, die Zeichnung, Computergrafik und Installation umfassen, beschäftigt sich Nasr mit der ägyptischen Gesellschaft und den Veränderungen, denen diese angesichts des aktuellen gesellschaftspolitischen Geschehens unterliegt. Als genauer Beobachter der ägyptischen Gesellschaft dokumentiert er in seinen Arbeiten Vorstellungen von Zusammenleben, Gemeinschaft, Kultur und alltägliche Probleme. Sei es in der Warteschlage beim Wählen, oder in der U-Bahn auf dem Weg nach Hause, der Künstler beobachtet stets die Menschen um sich herum und ihre Körperhaltung, um diese Eindrücke in lebensgroße Formate zu übertragen.
Die Ausstellung wurde durch das Goethe-Institut Kairo unterstützt und ist Teil von Vorspiel 2016, ein Veranstaltungsprogramm der transmediale und des CTM, das Berliner Projekträume, Kollektive und Initiativen vorstellt, die im Bereich von digitaler Kunst & Kultur sowie experimenteller Musik und Sound arbeiten.
Yara Mekawei, geboren 1987 in Kairo, Ägypten, arbeitet als Künstlerin und Kuratorin mit Klangkunst und elektronischer Musik. Die Künstlerin studierte an der Faculty of Art Education an der Helwan University, Kairo und lehrt derzeit an der Medienkunst und Design-Abteilung der MSA Universität, Gizeh. Yara Mekawei hat an zahlreichen künstlerischen Workshops, Ausstellungen und Live-Performance-Events in Europa und dem Nahen Osten teilgenommen.
Mina Nasr, geboren 1983 in Kairo, Ägypten, lebt und arbeitet als Künstler in Kairo, Ägypten.
Er studierte an der Faculty of Applied Arts der Helwan University in Kairo und nahm an verschiedenen Artist-in-Residence Programmen in Spanien, Italien und der Schweiz teil. Seit 2005 sind seine Arbeiten in zahlreichen Ausstellungen in Ägypten, Deutschland, Schweiz, China und Großbritannien vertreten.

In the course of her research, Cairo-based artist Yara Mekawei has been dealing with the atmosphere that surrounds people in the morning during breakfast, and with the noises and sounds that accompany it. Wherever one might be, whether at home, at work, in a restaurant or on the street, the sound of breakfast marks the beginning of a fresh, new day. Sounds of clattering crockery, cutlery, coffee machines, boiling water, morning discussions, TV and radio newscasts, all these sounds change depending on the type, style and location of the breakfast.
The artist has collected these sounds and images that accompany the often overlooked, everyday act of having breakfast and has merged them into a sound installation. "The Breakfast" establishes an imaginary connection between people all over the world performing the same act in a given period of time – even if the execution of this act varies due to different customs, traditions or place. The result is an utopian mix that playfully crosses borders.
The installation at uqbar was created in cooperation with the Cairo-based artist Mina Nasr. The fragile network of speaker membranes that transmits Mekawei's breakfast soundscape, is countered with a large wall drawing by Nasr on the opposite wall. In his art work, ranging from drawing, computer graphics to installation, Nasr talks about the changes the Egyptian society is currently undergoing given the socio-political happenings. As a close observer of Egyptian society, he documents ideas of coexistence, community, culture and everyday problems in his work. Whether whilst waiting in line to vote, or sitting in a metro waiting to get home, the artists continuously observes the people around him and their bodily expressions in order to translate and re-adapt these impressions into life-size formats like wall drawings.
This exhibition is supported by the Goethe-Institut Kairo and is part of Vorspiel 2016, a distributed programme of transmediale and CTM partner events happening before the festivals, dedicated to present Berlin-based project spaces, collectives and initiatives that are working in the field of digital art & culture and experimental sound & music.
Yara Mekawei, born 1987 in Cairo, Egypt, lives and works as sound art and electronic music composer and curator. She studied the Faculty of Art Education at Helwan University, Cairo and currently teaches at the Media Art and Design department at the MSA University, Giza. Yara Mekawei curated and performed in many artistic workshops, exhibitions and live performance events in Europe and the Middle East.
Mina Nasr, born in 1983 in Cairo, Egypt, lives and works as artist in Cairo, Egypt. He studied at the Faculty of Applied Arts at Helwan University in Cairo and participated in several Artist-in-Residence programs in Spain, Italy and Switzerland. Since 2005, Mina Nasr has been represented in exhibitions in Egypt, Germany, Switzerland, China and Great Britain.
